“Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast
down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.”
Psalm 37:24
The above scripture, in context, could read thus: “Though a good man
fall, he shall not be utterly cast down….” The good man is that one
who loves and serves God.
An image is portrayed here of a man walking along a path who then
stumbles or falls to the earth.
The scripture in no way alludes to one falling into sin but rather
falling into trouble, sickness, or misfortunate. Serving the Lord
does not exempt us from some of the trials and battles that others
face. As Christians, we are not spiritual robots without feelings,
emotions, disappointments, and yes, mistakes and failures. There
will be things in life that cause saved people to stumble and
possibly fall down. There are heartaches and difficulties that can
sometimes momentarily cause one to lose courage and strength. There
are personal weaknesses that we contend with that can cause us to
stumble along our spiritual journey.
The blessing is not that we will never fall, but that THOUGH we
fall, we shall not be utterly cast down. The saved will not be
totally thrown down or cast away that they can never rise again. Any
stumble or fall will be temporary and short-lived for the Lord
upholdeth us by His hand. Thank the Lord.
God is ever standing by His children to lift them up lest they fall
due to the hardships they encounter. As Peter began to sink, Jesus
stretched out His hand and lifted him up. So God will do for you
today.
Due to a physical condition, there are many times that I have
stumbled and fallen. At times I have found myself completely cast
down, unable to get back up on my own. But, there are times that
someone has been beside me that when I fall, they help hold me up
that I am not completely cast down on the ground. The fall then is a
temporary backset and I am able to continue walking.
Be not dismayed if you fall, but be of good courage and comfort in
knowing that you SHALL NOT be utterly cast down. God is ever with
us, walking beside us. When we stumble and fall, we shall be upheld
and lifted up by the power and grace of God.
