“Be
still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
As a young child, I remember times when I would get rambunctious and
then get chastised by my parents. My father would say “Sit down and
be still.” This served as a time to get quiet and refocus on
appropriate behavior. It is very difficult for not only children but
also for adults to be still. One might think that the instruction to
“Be still” is just for children. But, since I have gotten older, I
have been told those words again by my heavenly Father.
There are many things in life that can trouble and worry us. Often
when we face difficult circumstances, we struggle and try to find a
way to solve the problems. Our minds can be overwhelmed as we try in
ourselves to handle the trials of life. When people can’t find a
solution, depression and anxiety is often the result.
When we try so hard in our own strength and wisdom to ‘handle’
things, the Lord says “Be still.” When the adversities of life seem
as though they may overwhelm us, the Lord says “Be still.” We need
to learn to get quiet before God and cease from our activity and
worry.
The scripture says to “Be still and know that I am God.” In getting
quiet before God, we need to reflect and meditate upon who God is.
God is bigger than all of our troubles. He knows the things that
weigh us down in spirit. He is our creator and our savior. When we
get so troubled with things, we need to be still and know that God
is still in control.
Spiritual serenity must be cultivated in spite of the raging waters
and shaking mountains around about us. We are incapable of
successfully facing life in our own strength. While the flesh says
to get busy and do something about our problems, the Lord tells us
to be still and trust in His power.
If you have been burdened with cares and problems, I encourage you
today to be still, get quiet, and remember God. This will bring a
refocus to the problem and enable you to face life with peace and
calmness of spirit.
