“And he spake a parable unto them to this end,
that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.” Luke 18:1
Jesus proceeded to tell the story of the importunate
widow who, through her continual seeking and asking, caused the
unjust judge to answer her request lest he be continually wearied by
her coming.
Jesus was not illustrating God, who is faithful and
just and never wearies of our petitions, but rather was
demonstrating how important it is that we pray and not give up even
when we don’t receive an immediate blessing.
Though our prayers appear to be long unanswered, we
must persevere and continually come to God with our requests. How
often we grow weary of praying for the same burdens when it seems as
though nothing is changing. Jesus wants us to ‘Pray On.’
Prayer is not always easy and after months or years
of praying for unsaved loved ones, for the afflicted, for broken
homes, etc, the temptation is to let off and to content ourselves in
the knowledge that God knows the need and we will place it in His
hand. While we must stay submitted to His will, we are duty bound to
pray without ceasing until the answer comes. "For men ought always
to pray, and not to faint."
In earnestness of heart and fervency of spirit, we
need to ‘Pray On’ though it be for many years, until God reveals
Himself in answer to our prayer. Too often we stop short of the
blessing because of weariness and unbelief.
Many would still be unsaved today expect for someone
who ‘prayed on.’ Many an individual has been healed because
‘another’ prayer was prayed. Many people have victory over personal
weaknesses because they ‘prayed on’ when it seemed hopeless.
Be encouraged and seek for a renewed burden to ‘Pray
On.’ Let us not give up and faint, but with assurance and
persistence let us bring our petitions to the throne of God.
