“Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us…but
if not…” Daniel 3:17-18
These words were spoken by the three Hebrew children when they
refused to bow down to the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had
erected. They were given another opportunity by the king lest they
be thrown into the furnace. Consider their response in its entirety.
“We are not careful to answer thee in this matter. If it be so, our
God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery
furnace, and he will deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and
he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it
known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor
worship the golden image which thou hast set up.” Daniel 3:16b-18
These young men were steadfast in their faith and devotion to God
regardless of circumstances and the outcome of their trial. God
desires for us to have the same determination and faith. Many people
will acknowledge God’s supreme power and ability and will profess
faith as long as the outcome is pleasing to the flesh. True faith is
when we trust not only in God’s miracle working power, but in His
wisdom. God does not always work and do things like we think would
be best. So many today are looking for the miracles, the wonders,
the supernatural. Faith is not based on outcomes and results, but on
a complete trust and devotion to God.
We too should be resolved that in spite of the trial and adverse
circumstances, we will not turn away from God. There may be other
avenues and directions to go, but we must not bow down to any other
God or power.
Our faith is in the God whom we serve. We steadfastly look to Him
knowing He is well able to deliver, but if not, our faith will
remain strong in an omnipotent God.
