“And whosoever shall give a drink unto one of these
little ones a cup of cold water…he shall in no wise lose his
reward.” Matthew 10:42
The blessings and reward of our heavenly Father come not by the
‘big’ things that we do, but by small deeds of service and
sacrifice. While many want to do great things for God, often the
greatest things are done in seemingly small ways. We may feel like
we don’t have much to offer to the Lord, but if we give what we
have, we will in no wise lose our reward. A word of kindness, an
expression of love, an extended hand have far reaching effects in
people's lives. Years ago, there was a brother that was going
through a period of difficulty. I saw another brother in the Lord
come up and give the man a hug and tell him he was loved. The man
broke down at this simple expression. Wise words aren't as important
as heart felt love and service.
Although we can be blessed with giving large amounts, many of us
don’t have much to give. If we sacrifice in the little we have for
God, we will be blessed. God can take the little and do much with
it. I read a story of a child in India going to the home of a
missionary. The child wanted to do something to help the work of
missions, so she gave the missionary a penny. The penny bought a
Christian tract which was placed in a box, from which anyone who
wanted a tract could take on free. The tract came into the hands of
a head-hunter who later became converted. A few years later, a
church was built there. Fifteen hundred natives were saved from
heathenism. One shiny penny was given to Jesus with a heart of love
by a little child, but the results of that penny’s work made it
priceless indeed.
Let us be challenged to give and do as we are able. It may seem
insignificant and we may never see the results; but with love
motivating our words and sacrifice, God will bless. We should not
allow the enemy to intimidate us because all we may have to give is
a ‘cup of cold water.’ Jesus said he that giveth that water to one
of the little ones would in ‘no wise lose his reward.’
