"I must
be about my Father's business." Luke 2:49
Jesus' stated intent was to be diligent and faithful in the calling
God had placed upon him. He was willing and obedient to busy himself
with the work God had for Him to perform. As Jesus is our example,
let us also be faithful in our service and calling and not fall into
idleness.
A great danger of idleness is discontent. Once a Federal prison
warden commented in an interview, "When you get ...idleness, you get
discontent, and that breeds rebelliousness." If our minds and hands
are not occupied with purposeful action we may begin to look around
and become discontented with what we do or do not have. And idle
mind is more apt to be a questioning and critical one.
Idleness affects our speech and actions as well. Timothy spoke of
idle women going about tattling and being busybodies. Scripture
tells us that we are to give account for those idle words in the day
of judgment.
Jesus' purpose on earth was to reconcile our hearts to God and to be
an example to us of the way God intended for man to live. We have a
high calling as children of God to minister to a lost world as
ambassador's for Christ. We must be up and doing. Let us build up,
restore, and encourage each one around us. Time is short. There is
no time for idleness. I must be about my Father's business.
